Rhode Island Science Olympiad, March 31st

Science Olympiad
On the the last day of March, students participated in the 2007 Rhode Island Science Olympiad. Our students competed against twenty other schools from around the state. Both middle and high school participated in a number of events that required them to become experts in various fields of science. Our school took home several medals this year.

Erick Argueta earned a bronze medal for representing the high school in the science bowl event. Marlon Ford earned a gold medal for representing the middle school in the science bowl event. Javielka Polanco and Leslie-Anne Flego won third place in Science Word. Marlon Ford and Erick Oladapo won second place in Meteorology.  Javellys Polanco and Leslie-Anne Flego won first place in Science Crime Busters. It is the first time our Academy has come home with a first place medal!  Ms. Levasseur and Mrs. Stockdale were extremely proud of all the students who competed in Science Olympiad 2007.

Mr. Evan's March Madness, March 23rd

Mr. Evan's Advocacy
Again this year, Mr. Evans, Dean of Students K-12, together with his student advocacy group, hosted the March Madness 3 on 3 Half Court Basketball Tournament.  This event held in the school's Gym was open only to current Times2 Academy students.  Sixteen teams competed in the single elimination tournament to determine who is Times2 Academy’s best. Teams consisted of boy-girl combinations or middle-high school players.

The event consisted of a Slam Dunk Contest, 3 on 3 Tournament, a Free Throw Contest, music, and free prizes.  Luz Marie and Phyllis Sosa performed the opening Star-Spangled Banner to the crowds delight. The top two winning teams took home trophies.  The after school event brought in parents to cheer along side faculty and students. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place teams.

The Elementary Celebrates Community, March 23rd

Are You Smarter than a Fifth GraderMrs. Alicia Reniere-Castle, the Elementary Head,  is proud to announce that our fifth graders took on the responsibility to organize a K-6 “Pennies for Patients” campaign (through the Rhode Island Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) helping families experiencing Leukemia and Lymphoma.  For three weeks, these responsible students and our school community came together to raise over $2000.00 for this worthy cause.  They held a popcorn and freeze pop sale, and a raffle to encourage students to participate in school-wide community action.

On March 23rd, the last day of the event, we held an assembly in our school gym to celebrate the efforts of the entire elementary school community.  The teachers enthusiastically agreed to play in relay races and a basketball game with the students who raised the most money, and Mrs. Reniere-Castle played a round of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” facing questions made up by each grade level.  Mrs. Reniere-Castle met the challenge with success!  There are wonderful things happening in Rhode Island communities every day.  In our community, some of our youngest members committed to making the world a better place, succeeded, and went beyond even their own expectations.
