Fifth Grade March News

Whether March rolls in like a lion or a lamb, our fifth graders are charging through each day with full force!  As the midpoint of third quarter fast approaches, we have accomplished so much, with many exciting adventures still ahead!

All three classes are wrapping up The U.S. Government and the Election Process in Social Studies.  Mrs. Gaulin’s and Mrs. Brodeur’s classes will be covering Africa throughout the third quarter with a focus on the geography, culture, and relevant current events of the continent.  Ms. Salman’s class will be studying the causes and effects of the Civil War in our Blue vs. Gray unit.  Students will learn about the important roles Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis played and why this was a pivotal time in our nation’s history.

Mrs. Brodeur’s class has concluded their study of A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Mrs. Gaulin’s class will be finished by the end of the month.  Students have become pros with determining importance through events in absurd fiction!  Ms.  Salman’s class is continuing their study of author Jerry Spinelli and his powerful realistic fiction.

Both Mrs. Gaulin and Ms. Salman have scheduled our class plays for the month of May.  Mrs. Gaulin’s class will present our interpretation of Louis Sachar’s Sixth Grade Secrets on May 9th, and Ms. Salman’s class will present A Country Torn Apart on May 22nd.  More information on both performances will be forthcoming.

Mrs. Gaulin’s class is organizing our 2008 Pennies for Patients drive, which will be kicking off on Monday, March 3rd, and continue through Monday, March 24th.  Our goal is to raise $2500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help fund research for blood cancers and improve the quality of life for patients in our community.  Through this service project, we hope to instill in our students the importance of helping others and to appreciate the intrinsic rewards of such actions.

As a reminder, reading logs are due to your child’s teacher daily or weekly, depending on the requirements of the class.  Many students have not been fulfilling this part of the homework obligation, and logs not returned do negatively affect homework credit.

Also, our school uniform policy calls for black or brown shoes or sneakers, or a solid color sneaker on days 1 and 3 for gym.  Girls wearing a skirt or jumper must be wearing navy blue tights.  As always, shirts must be tucked in at all times, and only plain navy sweaters or sweatshirts are permitted.

Any family who has any “scraps” (pieces of cloth, wood, poster board, buttons, etc.) that may be useful for classroom projects is welcome to send it in as a donation to your child’s class.  We are always looking for materials that will enhance instruction and allow for creative presentations!

Thank you for your continued support of our classes, and as always, feel free to contact us at any time.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Brodeur, Mrs. Gaulin, and Ms. Salman
