Fifth Grade Newsletter~ January 2008

Happy New Year to all of our families!  We hope you enjoyed the festivities during winter break and are well rested and refreshed as we embark on a new year.

Students in Ms. Salman’s class were very busy writing business letters to grades K – 6.  The letters focused on the “Block Style” business format and thanked all involved in helping to make our Cereal Drive a success.  Students followed the Writing Process and published each of their business letters in Microsoft Word at the computer lab.  This was the culminating task that provided full closure to our endeavor.  A continuation of the Jerry Spinelli author study will now resume as we read “Loser.”

Mrs. Brodeur’s class is submerged in different formats of informational writing.  These include:  comparing and contrasting characters in literature as well as the similarities and differences of the planets, writing business letters, and responding to various debate prompts.  All of this hard work and preparation will lead them to their workshops on persuasive writing.

A series study is off to an exciting start in Mrs. Gaulin’s class as the students begin to read a “Series of Unfortunate Events” by Lemony Snicket.  This is a fabulous example of absurd fiction.  The author makes them laugh while considering serious issues.  This will be a wonderful series to support higher level reading strategies such as inferring and synthesizing.  Their class will be performing Louis Sachar’s, Sixth Grade Secrets on Friday, February 15th.

Uniform Reminder – Please help us to reinforce our dress requirements here at Times Squared Academy.  Only Times2 sweaters or plain navy sweatshirts/sweaters are allowed.  We thank you for your attention in this matter.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Brodeur, Mrs. Gaulin, and Ms. Salman
