Second Grade News ~ December 2007

DECEMBER FAMILY NEWSLETTER

Hello, Families!  We hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving!  November was a short month, so this letter will include November information along with upcoming events and dates for December.

1.                  We were very happy to meet and talk with a lot of parents at Parent Conferences this past month.  Please remember to return all report card envelopes to the appropriate teacher.  Some of the children have not yet brought back these envelopes.

2.                  All three second grade classrooms continue to work hard in Writing.  We have all been working on How To Books, Personal Narratives and Letter Writing.  Ms. Bernabe’s class in also learning about Poetry Writing this month. Students are always encouraged to continue experimenting with the different genres of writing that have been introduced throughout the year. This enables the children to express their creative thoughts and ideas successfully.

3.                  We are all nearly finished studying our current author, Arnold Lobel. Although we will all be moving on to yet another author, the children will continue to enjoy The Frog and Toad Series and are encouraged to revisit them for the remainder of the year. Our classrooms have not only read these adorable stories, but we have also learned a valuable lesson about friendship.  The children learned a friendship poem and wrote responses to the stories almost daily.  We all enjoyed comparing and contrasting the characters Frog and Toad.

4.                  In Social Studies, we are all continuing to learn and discover all about Rhode Island.  This unit will continue throughout the upcoming months.  Please be sure to ask your child all the exciting and wonderful things they have learned about the State they live in.

5.                  Mrs. Murray and Ms. Bernabe’s students are continuing to learn and discover all about Pebbles, Sand and Silt Unit.  We are enjoying working together, and exploring with the three kinds of volcanic rocks.  We have also sorted a set of six rocks with a partner and gathered information about the rocks and made a chart about the different characteristics. We also discovered what happens when we rub the rocks together.

Miss Scott’s class has completed the above mentioned unit of study and is beginning Solids and Liquids.

READING TO YOUR CHILD

Children of all ages enjoy having interesting stories read to them.  Not only does a child have a good time listening to stories, but this listening technique will also help him/her in developing better comprehension skills.  This is something we all in the second grade are working on daily.  Read to your child daily or have your child read to you. Pick a regular time for reading to or with your child every day. Enjoy the story together.  Reading must always be a rewarding experience.

REMINDERS

PLEASE REMEMBER TO LOOK IN YOUR CHILD’S FOLDER NIGHTLY AND REMOVE ALL CORRECTED PAPERS.

WE ALL LOOK TO A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON  HOWEVER,  PLEASE MAKE SURE TO REMIND YOUR CHILD THAT SCHOOL IS STILL A PRIORITY DURING THE HOLIDAY MONTH!

EACH SECOND GRADE WILL HAVE THEIR HOLIDAY PARTY IN THE CLASSROOM ON DECEMBER 21, 2007.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CELEBRATION YOU CAN DONATE SNACKS AND DRINKS.  PLEASE LOOK FOR THE UPCOMING LETTER ABOUT THIS CELEBRATION.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT,

MISS SCOTT, MRS. MURRAY AND MS. BERNABE
