First Grade News ~ December 2007

Dear Parents,

We would like to take a minute and thank all of the parents and family members who participated in Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Many parents came to show their support and interest in their child’s education.  This was also a great opportunity to meet our students’ families.  Thank you for making this important night such a success!

As we begin second quarter, the children will continue to learn and practice their Math addition facts.  They are currently learning their doubles facts (e.g. 4+4, 2+2, 8+8) and plus one facts (e.g. 4+1, 2+1, 8+1).  The students have really picked up on these, and are doing an excellent job! As you have probably noticed, they practice these facts each night for homework.  Please continue to check and sign their homework sheets.  Another way to reinforce these facts at home is to ask your child to sing our “Doubles Rap” to you!

In Science, we continue to explore Balance and Motion through various lessons and experiments.  The students have been learning a great deal through hands-on activities and exploration.  In Social Studies, we continue to focus on the city of Providence.  The students have been drawing and writing about various events and landmarks in our city including Waterfire, Roger Williams Park and Zoo, and shows at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

Before the winter break, we would like to have a winter party for the students.  We will be in touch with you soon regarding further details.  Also, please make sure your child reads over the winter break.  It is important that they continue to practice the reading strategies they have been taught.

 A few reminders:

  • Please make sure you child is dressed warmly.  Weather permitting, we do go outside for recess every day.   Therefore, please dress your child appropriately (coats, mitten, scarves, etc).
  • Please make sure your child is always dressed in his or her school uniform.

If you have any questions or concern, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.  We greatly appreciate your continued support and cooperation!
